When people ask, “What’s the #1 best Pokémon card?” the answers can get pretty wild. Some say it should be the rarest card. Others vote based on power in the game. And then you have collectors who care only about history and nostalgia.

But if you’re talking about the one card that stands above the rest, the card almost every collector knows and respects, there’s one that always seems to rise to the top:

What is the 1 best Pokémon card.jpg

The 1999 Holographic Charizard (Base Set)

Yep — the classic Base Set Charizard.
The fiery orange dragon that pretty much defined the entire hobby for a lot of people.

Why Charizard Usually Takes the #1 Spot

Here’s why this card gets so much love:

1. It’s the card everyone wanted as a kid

Back in the late ’90s, pulling a Charizard was like winning the lottery at recess. Even people who weren’t serious collectors wanted it. That kind of childhood hype never really went away.

2. It’s insanely collectible

A clean, early print Charizard can be one of the most valuable Pokémon cards in existence. Some mint condition versions have sold for massive amounts. The card has history, demand, and nostalgia — a perfect mix for collectibles.

3. It still looks amazing

Even years later, that original artwork still hits. The bright red border, the iconic pose, the holographic shine — it’s basically the face of early Pokémon TCG.

4. It represents the peak of the early game

For a lot of fans, Charizard isn’t just strong — it’s symbolic. It’s the card that made people fall in love with collecting.

Are there other “best cards”? Sure.

Depending on who you ask:

  • Pikachu Illustrator is the rarest.
  • Shadowless cards are highly respected.
  • Gold Star Pokémon have their own fanbase.
  • Modern chase cards (like alternate-art cards) keep today’s hype alive.

But if you’re talking about the #1 card that combines popularity, value, nostalgia, and pure legendary status, Charizard still wins most conversations.

What is the #1 Best Pokémon Card in YOUR heart — and why does it matter to you?

Honestly, the Pokémon card that means the most to me is Bulbasaur. And it’s not some rare version or anything crazy. It’s literally the first card I ever got. Someone in school traded it to me for two stickers, which now sounds like a terrible trade, but at the time I felt like I won the lottery 😂.

I carried that card around everywhere. Like, it wasn’t even in a sleeve, it was just shoved in my pocket half the time. Corners bent, little scratches, the whole thing. But I didn’t care. It was mine. And it kinda became this little thing that always made me weirdly happy to look at.

Every time I see it now, it brings back this whole wave of random memories — sitting on the floor opening packs with my cousin, arguing about who would win in a battle, trading cards behind the teacher’s back, stuff like that. Nothing huge, just small moments that meant a lot when you’re a kid.

So yeah, Bulbasaur is my #1. Not because it’s strong or rare or whatever… it just reminds me of a time when life felt simple and fun, and I kinda like holding on to that.
